RBI ₹2000 Note: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said that the total value of Rs 2,000 bank notes out of the bank at the close of business on December 29 dropped to Rs 9,330 crore. In this way, 97.38 percent of the Rs 2000 bank notes have now returned to the banks and now only Rs 9,330 crore notes are left with the people. The total number of Rs 2,000 bank notes in circulation at the close of business on May 19, 2023. The value was Rs 3.56 lakh crore when it was announced that it would be deposited in banks.
“The total value of Rs 2,000 notes, which was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, has now declined to Rs 9,330 crore at the close of business on December 29, 2023,” the RBI said in a statement.
Notes can be changed at 19 places
The central bank said that Rs 2,000 notes still remain legal tender. These notes can be exchanged or deposited by visiting the 19 regional offices of RBI across the country. Apart from this, people can send Rs 2,000 notes from any post office to any RBI office through India Post to deposit in their bank accounts.
Crowd gathered outside RBI office
While withdrawing these notes from circulation, RBI had asked to exchange these notes by September 30 or deposit them in bank accounts. Later the deadline was extended till October 7. From October 8, people can exchange or deposit Rs 2,000 notes by visiting 19 RBI offices. Because of this, a good crowd is seen in these offices during working hours.
2000 rupee note was issued in 2016
These offices of RBI are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. In November 2016, after discontinuing the existing notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500, RBI had issued a note of Rs 2,000.
