₹2000 Notes: The Reserve Bank of India has shared important information related to 2000 rupee notes. The country’s central bank has said that the total value of 2000 rupee bank notes in circulation at the close of business on 19 May 2023 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. The Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday said that 98.21 per cent of the Rs 2000 notes have returned to the banking system and only Rs 6,366 crore worth of such notes are still with the public. On May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation.
RBI said that the total value of Rs 2000 bank notes in circulation at the time of closure of business on 19 May 2023 was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. After the closure of business on 31 March 2025, notes worth about Rs 6,366 crore remain in the market. RBI said in the statement, “Thus, 98.21 percent of the Rs 2000 bank notes in circulation till 19 May 2023 have been returned.”
The facility to deposit and/or exchange Rs 2000 banknotes was available at all bank branches till October 7, 2023. However, this facility is still available at 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank. From October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices are also accepting Rs 2000 banknotes from individuals and institutions for depositing them in their bank accounts.
Apart from this, common people can also send Rs 2000 notes from any post office in the country to any office of the Reserve Bank of India through India Post to deposit them in their bank account. RBI has said that Rs 2000 banknotes will continue to be legal tender.
