8th Pay Commission: The government has taken a step forward towards forming the 8th Pay Commission. The government is going to send the Terms of Reference for Cabinet approval early next month. After getting clearance from the Cabinet, the notification will be issued by the government. If this happens, the commission will start its work from April. The ministry has also sought recommendations from Defense and Home Affairs and Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Once the commission is formed, it will review the salary structure. After that it will give its recommendations on the salary structure.

Recommendations will go to the Cabinet

The Finance Ministry has already received many feedbacks regarding the Terms of Reference. Now they are also waiting for some final feedback. According to sources, they have received many inputs regarding the 8th Pay Commission. Some of these are still pending. It will be sent to the Cabinet for approval at the end of this month or early next month.

8th Pay Commission will be implemented from March 2026

The 8th Pay Commission will be implemented when the Terms of Reference are finalized. If it is formed by the end of this month, it will be implemented by March 2026. However, this entire process will take less than a year. The previous pay commission also took a year.

Formation of 8th Pay Commission

The government approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025, which will review the salary and allowances of government employees. It will also consider the pension structure of pensioners. This commission will make recommendations keeping in mind inflation, economic growth and financial conditions. Usually a new pay commission is constituted every 10 years.

Who will benefit?

65 lakh pensioners – Government pensioners will benefit from the new salary structure.

50 lakh central government employees – Employees of different ministries, departments and public sector undertakings (PSUs) will benefit.

Defense employees – Salaries and allowances of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel will be improved.

Effect of 7th Pay Commission

The 7th Pay Commission, implemented in 2016, increased the salary and pension payment of government employees and pensioners by Rs 1 lakh crore in the first year itself. In such a situation, major salary reforms are also expected from the 8th Pay Commission. Government employees and pensioners are now waiting for the implementation of the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission in 2026, which is likely to increase their salaries and allowances.
