8th Pay Commission: Government employees are getting paid under the 7th Pay Commission. Government employees have been waiting for the 8th Pay Commission for a long time. So that, the salary of central employees can be increased. The government has given an important statement regarding the 8th Pay Commission. Finance Secretary TV Somanathan has said that the central government has no plans to make the eighth pay commission for about 54 lakh central government employees and pensioners before the national elections next year.

Recently there were reports that the Central Government is planning to bring the 8th Pay Commission before the Lok Sabha elections 2024. In the past, ahead of elections, governments have used setting up pay commissions as an effective way to win over central government employees, armed forces personnel and family pensioners. The 7th Pay Commission was introduced by the Congress-led UPA government in September 2013, a few months before the state and general elections.

However, BJP has refrained from such a step. Instead the focus has been on reviewing the new pension scheme which has become a bone of contention for new state and central government employees. Currently, employees contribute 10 percent of their basic salary, while the government pays 14 percent. This has become politically controversial, with many opposition-ruled states switching to the old pension scheme that gave pensioners a monthly guarantee of 50 percent of their last drawn salary. The government constituted a committee under the leadership of the Finance Secretary to review the system. “We have completed discussions with all concerned parties and our report should be submitted soon,” Somanathan said.
