Driving License: If the license is not renewed in time, the license expires, then you can be fined as per the rules.
The driving license can be renewed even after expiry, as the holder gets a grace period for one year and after that, the license will lapse forever. A new driving license will be required to drive again. For this, you do not even need to cut round the RTO offices. You can get your driving license renewed right from home. Explain that the validity of the driving license is for a period of 20 years from the date of issue. If you do not renew it after this time, the license expires and you can be fined according to the Rules of the Vehicle Act of 1988. Therefore, it is advised that you get your driving license rather than applying afresh.
In this way renew your driving license online at home
- First log on to https://parivahan.gov.in and go to the online services and select driving license-related services from the drop-down menu
- Now select the state for which the driving license needs to be renewed.
- After selecting the state you will go to the next page which has many options related to driving license. Select this option ‘Apply for DL Renew’ from the screen
- You will be directed which will show all the instructions for submitting the application. Read all this carefully, download Form 1-A if you are above 40 years and click continue
- Now a page will appear where you have to fill all the details like DL number, date of birth, state, RTO, etc. and then proceed.
- Now, confirm your details as displayed and press the proceed button
- A new page will open, here you will see a page which will ask you to tick the options under the services on your driving license, choose ‘Renew DL’ from the list
- Now you will be directed to the page where you will see all your driving license details.
- Click on update, fill the barcode and click on submit. On clicking submit you will get an application number
- The next step is to download the form. Fill any other relevant personal and / or vehicle related details, upload your photo and signature and click submit
- You will also have to upload the required documents (if any).
- You can also be asked to upload a photo and signature. Explain that this step is applicable only in some states
- You have to pay the fees and verify your payment state
- Now you can print out or download the receipt for future reference
