NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar released the third edition of SDG India Index on Thursday.
New Delhi. Central government think tank NITI Aayog has released the ranking of SDG India Index 2020-2021 (SDG India Index). In this, Kerala has retained its top position, while Bihar’s performance was the worst. Under the SDG index, the progress of states and union territories is evaluated on social, economic and environmental parameters.
According to a report, Kerala retained its position as the top state with 75 points, while Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu were ranked second with 74 points. Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam are the worst performing states in this year’s India Index.
Chandigarh on top among union territories
Among the Union Territories, Chandigarh with a score of 79 got the top spot, followed by Delhi with a score of 68. Mizoram, Haryana and Uttarakhand registered the highest increase in the year 2020-21. Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Punjab, Haryana, Tripura, Delhi, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh remained in the leading category with more than 65 marks.
NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar released the third edition of the India SDG Index on Thursday. India’s overall SDG index improved by six points to 66 points from 60 in 2020-21. Kumar said, “Our effort to monitor SDGs through the SDG India Index has been widely appreciated across the world. This is a rare data based initiative to rank our states and union territories by computing a composite index on SDGs.
Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog, said, “This report reflects the strength of the partnership that has been built up during our SDG efforts. This shows how collaborative initiatives can lead to better results.
SDG India Index was launched in 2018
The index was launched in December 2018 and has become a major tool for monitoring progress on SDGs in the country. In the first edition of 2018-19, 13 goals, 39 targets and 62 indicators were included, while in this third edition 17 goals, 70 goals and 115 indicators were included.
