Today is World Senior Citizen Day. Senior citizens are the asset of any society. Every society takes care of them. Indian Railways also takes care of senior citizens. On World Senior Citizens Day, we are telling you what are the facilities available to senior citizens in Railways.
According to railway rules, men of 60 years and women of 58 years come under the category of senior citizens. They were earlier given concession in all classes of train fares. This discount was available in Mail/Express/Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi/Duronto, all trains. This relaxation was 40% for male senior citizens and 50% for female senior citizens. It has been closed during the Corona period. There is no clear information about when this exemption will start again.
There are two types of coaches in Indian Railways trains. One is reserved and the other unreserved. When a senior citizen buys a reserve ticket, the railway allots them a lower berth on a priority basis. Similarly, the computer automatically gives a lower berth to a woman above 45 years of age. However, this priority is given only on the basis of availability.
Some berths are reserved for senior citizens in the railway trains which have reserve coaches. If we talk about sleeper coach, then in each of its coaches six lower berths are reserved for senior citizens. In case of AC 3 Tier AC 2 Tier coaches, three lower berths are reserved for senior citizens.
Women above 45 years of age and pregnant women are also accommodated in these berths. Fully AC trains like Rajdhani, Duronto have a few more berths reserved for senior citizens as compared to normal mail and express trains.
Railway’s local train is famous in some cities of the country. For example Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai etc. Central Railway and Western Railway operate local trains in Mumbai. Some seats in the local trains of both these Zonal Railways are earmarked for senior citizens. Only a few coaches are reserved for women in these trains. Ladies senior citizens are accommodated in the same coaches.
Wheel chairs are available for senior citizens at most major stations. You can ask for a wheel chair from the Station Master or Station Manager of the concerned station. He will provide you wheel chair with porter. However you will have to pay for the porter. You can also book it online. For this you can log on to www.irctc.co.in.
If a senior citizen fails to get a lower berth at the time of reservation, then they can get a lower berth in the train also. As per railway rules, if a lower berth remains vacant after the departure of the train, senior citizens with middle or upper berths can approach the TTE and request to allot it. TTE will allot the berth after completing some other formalities.
