Within a month of DMRC’s decision to allow passengers to carry two sealed liquor bottles in Delhi Metro trains, Delhi’s Excise Department has red-flagged the exemption. The department has demanded to change it as it is contrary to the law.
This rule of taking from one state to another
A senior excise department official said that as per the Excise Duty Act, only a sealed bottle of liquor like rum, vodka and whiskey can be transported from one state to another. The official said the metro trains carry passengers between Delhi and NCR cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. It would be a violation of the Act to allow any person to carry two sealed bottles.
People under 25 years of age are not allowed to drink alcohol
Apart from this, in Delhi, liquor cannot be sold to anyone below 25 years of age, whereas in cities like Gurugram, liquor can be sold to anyone below 18 years of age. The relaxation means any underage person can bring liquor from other places through metro trains and consume it in Delhi.
The official said a notice has been sent to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to change the rule of carrying two bottles of liquor to one, so that bottles can be brought by passengers in Metro trains connecting Delhi with cities of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. This should not be a violation of the Excise Duty Act.
DMRC last month had allowed passengers to carry two sealed bottles of liquor per person in Delhi Metro trains. Earlier, there was a ban on carrying liquor in Delhi Metro except the Airport Express Line.
