Bengaluru: The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has banned head coverings in recruitment examinations of boards and corporations to curb cheating such as cheating using Bluetooth devices. However, the examination body has given permission to wear mangalsutra and toe rings after protests by right-wing organisations.
According to CNN News18, however, hijab is not clearly mentioned in the list of prohibited clothing in the dress code of the examination authority. But the rules against covering the head during recruitment examinations will prohibit this. This announcement has been made ahead of the meetings of various boards and corporations to be held on November 18 and 19 across the state.
KEA said that wearing ‘any garment or cap covering the head, mouth or ears’ will not be allowed in the examination hall. The order said that this is part of the effort to prevent irregularities in the examination using Bluetooth devices. However, KEA had allowed hijab during the recruitment examinations held in October.
It is noteworthy that earlier on November 6, girl students appearing in the Karnataka Public Service Commission examination were asked to remove their ‘mangalsutra’ before entering the examination hall. At the same time, girl students were also asked to remove their jewellery, including earrings, chains and toe rings, a chain worn around the neck by married Hindu women. There was a lot of uproar after this incident. On this incident, BJP MLA Basanagouda Yatnal had asked whether this step is ‘only for Hindus’.
