Letter to Finance Minister for approval
According to an ET report, the United Forum of Bank Unions, an organization of bank employee unions, has written to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to allow a 5-day work week for the banking sector. Along with this, the Bank Employees Union also assured that there will be no cut in banking hours for customers or the total working hours of employees and officers. According to the report, the union has requested the Finance Minister to properly review the matter and give instructions to the Indian Banks Association (IBA).
What is the situation now
Let us tell you that currently bank branches remain closed on second and fourth Saturdays. There has been a demand for two holidays in a week for a long time but it has not been fulfilled till now. However, it is now estimated that soon employees will get two weeks off or holidays in a week.
Salary also expected to increase
Salary increase of bank employees is also possible. The IBA and bank employee unions last year reached an agreement for a 17 per cent wage hike across all public sector banks (PSBs) in India, amounting to Rs 12,449 crore. If the pay hike is approved by the Centre, around 9 lakh employees will benefit.
