New Chief Minister of Delhi: The name of the new Chief Minister of Delhi in place of Arvind Kejriwal has been announced. Atishi, a minister in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, will be the new Chief Minister of the national capital Delhi. Atishi has been elected the leader of the Delhi Aam Aadmi Party’s legislative party. Arvind Kejriwal proposed Atishi’s name, which was accepted by all the MLAs standing up. Atishi was considered a strong contender among the potential candidates for the post of Chief Minister. Atishi holds the maximum number of departments in the Delhi government, including Education, Finance, Public Works Department, Revenue and Services.

Atishi is also considered close to Kejriwal. She is also a senior spokesperson of the party, who defends the AAP government and Kejriwal. She targets the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in her regular press conference. Kejriwal announced his decision to resign from the post of Chief Minister on Sunday (September 15). He had said that he would sit on the Chief Minister’s chair only when people give him a certificate of honesty.

Kejriwal will resign today

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will resign today i.e. on Tuesday (17 September). Before that, a meeting of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Legislature Party was held at 11:30 am, in which the name of the new Chief Minister was discussed. Kejriwal will meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 4:30 pm. He is likely to submit his resignation during this time.

After being released from Tihar Jail on bail in the excise policy case, AAP National Convenor Kejriwal had said on Sunday that he would resign within 48 hours. Also, he will demand early elections in Delhi. He had said that until people give him a ‘certificate of honesty’, he will not sit on the Chief Minister’s chair. Kejriwal had said that he would hold a meeting of AAP MLAs in a few days and a leader of the party would become the Chief Minister.

AAP held several meetings on Monday. Kejriwal held one-on-one meetings with the members of the party’s highest decision-making body – Political Affairs Committee (PAC) at his official residence. In these meetings, their opinion was sought regarding the next Chief Minister. He had met senior leaders including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha regarding the party’s choice for the post of Chief Minister.

These names were also in the race

Apart from Delhi ministers Atishi, the names of Gopal Rai, Kailash Gehlot and Saurabh Bhardwaj were also in the news as potential contenders for the post of Chief Minister. Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal and Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goyal were also considered contenders for the post of CM. Deputy Speaker of Delhi Assembly Rakhi Birlan and MLA from Kondli Kuldeep Kumar were also potential contenders.

There were reports that a member of the minority community could be made the Chief Minister as the party has seen a decline in its support in the community since the 2020 Delhi riots. In such a scenario, Delhi Minister Imran Hussain was also likely to be chosen. However, now Atishi has won the race. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation from the post of Chief Minister is not a decision taken out of principle but out of compulsion.
