18 OTT Platforms Blocks: Government blocked 18 OTT platforms, know why the government took this tough decision

Centre Blocks 18 OTT Platforms: The central government has blocked 18 OTT platforms in 2024 due to obscene and vulgar content. The government has taken this step under the IT rules of 2021.

Centre Blocks 18 OTT Platforms: The central government has blocked 18 OTT platforms this year due to obscene and vulgar content. This information was given by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (December 18).

Responding to the question of Shiv Sena-UBT member Anil Desai, L Murugan said that the central government has taken this step to stop obscene or pornographic content.

Giving information, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said, “The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken strict action to stop obscene and vulgar content. In this, 18 OTT platforms have been blocked on March 14, 2024 due to obscene and in some cases pornographic content.

‘It is necessary to follow the Network Regulation Act, 1995’

Responding to another question, he said, “Digital news publications are required to follow the norms of journalistic conduct of the Press Council of India and the programme code under the Cable Television (Network Regulation Act, 1995).

‘Centre can issue directions’

Responding to another question, Murugan said that digital media publishers of news and current affairs, including YouTube news channels Bolta Hindustan and National Dastak, are covered under the provisions of the IT Rules, 2021, Part-III of which provides for issuing directions to block content covered under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act, 2000).

He further said that this rule empowers the Central Government to issue directions to any government agency or intermediary to prevent incitement to any cognizable offence in the interest of sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States or public order or in connection with such matters.
