8th Pay Commission: There is good news for about 1 crore central employees and pensioners of the country. The government has started preparations for the 8th Central Pay Commission. The government is seeking suggestions on the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the 8th Pay Commission. Inputs are being taken from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Defense, Home Ministry, Department of Personnel and Training and State Government.
Who will benefit?
With the implementation of the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission, about 36.57 lakh government employees (till March 1, 2025) and 33.91 lakh pensioners / family pensioners will directly benefit till December 31, 2024. Apart from this, there is also a possibility of increase in the salary and allowances of defense employees and pensioners. However, how much salary will actually increase will be decided only after the recommendations of the government.
Formation of 8th Pay Commission
The Prime Minister approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025, which will review the salaries and allowances of government employees. It will also consider the pension structure of pensioners. This commission will make recommendations keeping in mind inflation, economic growth and financial conditions. Usually a new pay commission is constituted every 10 years, and the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission are likely to be implemented from 2026.
Who will benefit?
65 lakh pensioners – Government pensioners will benefit from the new salary structure.
4 lakh government employees (in Delhi) – Salary of Delhi government employees will increase.
50 lakh central government employees – Employees of different ministries, departments and public sector undertakings (PSUs) will benefit.
Defense employees – Salary and allowances of Army, Navy and Air Force personnel will be improved.
Impact of 7th Pay Commission
The 7th Pay Commission, implemented in 2016, increased the salary and pension payment of government employees and pensioners by Rs 1 lakh crore in the first year itself. In such a situation, a big salary reform is also expected from the 8th Pay Commission. Government employees and pensioners are now waiting for the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission recommendations in 2026, which will increase their salaries and allowances.
