As the growing presence of fake currency in circulation continues to haunt people, the Reserve Bank of India is taking steps to make people aware of the counterfeit notes. As the RBI is celebrating Financial Awareness Week the week, its Regional Director, Laxmikant Rao, shared a guide to help people identify fake notes.
Rao highlighted the fact that how the fraudsters are targeting small demotions notes like Rs 50 and Rs 200 and printing their fakes as people don’t usually check if they are fake or real. RBI, thus, has shared a detailed fact sheet to help people identify fake notes.
Here are some features of real currency that will help you distinguish it from fake ones:
In the new notes, the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi is at the centre.
One can see-through register with denominational numeral 50 on the note.
The denominational numeral in Devnagari script.
Micro letters ‘RBI’, ‘भारत’, ‘INDIA’ and ‘50.’
Windowed security thread with inscriptions ‘भारत’ and RBI should be on the note.
Mahatma Gandhi portrait and electrotype (50) watermarks
Guarantee Clause, Governor’s signature with Promise Clause and RBI emblem towards right of Mahatma Gandhi portrait should be on the note.
Ashoka Pillar emblem should be on the right of the note’s back.
Check for the number panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top. left side and bottom right side.
The Year of printing of the note is on the left at the note’s back.
Check for the Swachh Bharat logo with the slogan.

People, as of now, to help RBI curb the presence of the fake notes, are advised to immediately inform the concerned authorities when they bump into a fake note. And in case the bank doesn’t listen to your complaint, you can lodge a complaint before the Lokpal against the institution regulated by RBI at https://cms.rbi.org.in.
