Aadhaar Can Be Rendered Far Safer: Here’s How

Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to people living in India. It is an important ID without which a lot of task as of today cannot be completed. Though its requirement is mandatory at a certain places, for preventing misuse and not falling prey to some of the likely frauds, there has been unveiled a solution by the UIDAI.

Aadhaar Can Be Rendered Far Safer: Here’s How

So, here is provided a method designed by the UIDAI to render your Aadhaar a lot safer

1. Masked Aadhar:

Through this option you can conceal your unique aadhaar Id or number in the downloaded e-Aadhaar edition. In it the first 8 digits of the Aadhaar number appear as “xxxx-xxxx” and the last four numbers are only reflected for reference purpose.

2. Virtual ID can also be used in place of Aadhaar:

This is a revocable 16-digit number mapped to Aadhaar. This VID can be substitute to Aadhaar wherever authentication or eKYC has to be done. Further using VID, the fraudster cannot extract the person’s Aadhaar. This VID also has a validity of 1 day and there can be just one VID generated against a Aadhaar ID. For generation, retrieval as well as replacement of VIDs, UIDAI has provided a number of options.

In the current regime, the facility of VID generation can be accessed via the resident portal of UIDAI. This on generation shall be sent to the aadhaar holder’s registered mobile number. Also, it can be got by sending an SMS in the format GVIDLast 4 digits of Aadhaar Number” and send it to 1947 through the registered Mobile Number.

In a tweet, UIDAI said, #BewareOfFraudsters If you don’t want to disclose your #Aadhaar number, then you can use VID or Masked Aadhaar, it is valid and accepted widely. To get VID/masked Aadhaar, download e-Aadhaar from here: https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in #AadhaarAwareness #aadhar
