Aadhaar Card: Address will not be updated in Aadhaar without address proof, UIDAI has closed this facility

UIDAI had till now given the facility that people who do not have any address proof in their name can update the address through Address Validation Letter. 45 documents are valid as address proof for address updation in Aadhaar.




If you want to update the address in the Aadhar card, then without the address proof it will not work. The reason for this is that UIDAI has stopped the facility of updating the address through the address validation letter for the time being. UIDAI has said in response to a user’s query on Twitter, ‘Dear Resident, Address Validation Letter facility has been discontinued till further notice. Please enter your address update request using any other valid proof of address document.

What was the facility till now

UIDAI had till now given the facility that people who do not have any address proof in their name can update the address through Address Validation Letter. With this facility, all those people who are tenants in someone else’s house or live in a joint family, in which the address proof is in the name of only one member of the family.

45 documents valid as address proof

Address update in Aadhar card can be done online by sitting at home or offline by visiting Aadhar center. 45 documents are valid as address proof for address updation in Aadhaar. These include passport, ration card, voter ID, driving license, bank passbook, electricity bill, water bill, telephone bill, insurance policy, government photo ID, pension card, farmer passbook, MNREGA job card etc. The complete list of these documents is available at https://uidai.gov.in/images/commdoc/valid_documents_list.pdf . Method of online address updation with address proof

  • Go to the Aadhaar website uidai.gov.in and move the cursor to the ‘My Aadhaar’ segment.
  • In the ‘Update Your Aadhaar’ section, click on Update Demographics Data Online. In the newly opened page click on Proceed to Update Aadhaar.
  • Then enter your 12 digit aadhaar number and captcha and click on send OTP.
  • After that OTP will come on your registered mobile number, which has to be entered and login.
  • Then click on Update Address via Address Proof option.
  • After this, you have to fill the complete address of the house, which includes its number, landmark, pincode, area and other information. Care off option will also appear which is part of the address, it is optional.
  • Before verifying the information you have given, check the address by clicking on the Preview button.
  • If the address is correct, then select the confirmation box and click on submit.
  • Select the document from the given list which will act as your home address proof.
  • Upload the document. Remember that documents can only be uploaded in JPEG, PNG and PDF files. You can also upload the photo of address proof by clicking on it.
  • At last click on submit button. On completion of the process a message will be displayed on the screen containing the URN number. The URN number will also be sent through SMS. Through this, you can check the update status later.
  • Remember, there is a charge of Rs 50 for updating the address in Aadhaar.
