Airport News: We all need a passport and visa to go abroad. But do you know that there is also a document which works like a passport at the airport and the person who has this document does not even need a visa. If you do not know, then let us tell you about this document today. The name of this document used like a passport at the airport is Seaman Book. Seaman Book can be used at the airport as well as seaport to go abroad.

Let us tell you here that not everyone can use the Seaman Book. Seaman Book is especially issued to employees working in Merchant Navy and Cruise Line. Apart from these, Seaman Book is also issued to fishermen working in fishing vessels. Just like you use a passport to go abroad, similarly the workers employed in Merchant Navy and Cruise Line use Seaman Book. Seaman Book is a kind of document which is called the identity card of the workers working in the ship.

Like a passport, Seaman Book also contains the name, date of birth, nationality and other details of the employees of the shipping company. Apart from this, the educational qualification of the employee is also mentioned in the Seaman Book. Also, the post of the worker, name of the ship deployed, duration of the journey are also mentioned in the Seaman Book. The worker deployed in any vessel or ship in the international waters is identified through this Seaman Book. The immigration process is also completed at the foreign port through this Seaman Ship.

Can Seaman Book be used at the airport?

According to a senior airport security official, all passengers travelling by air for tourism, business, medical and other purposes need a valid passport and visa at the airport. However, if a person deployed in merchant navy, cruise line or vessel reaches the airport with a Seaman Book to join his duty, then the Seaman Book is accepted as a passport. However, during the Bureau of Immigration check at the airport, the passenger has to show the Continuous Discharge Certificate cum Seafarer Identity Document (CDC) along with the Seaman Book.

Does a Seaman Book holder not need a visa?

According to a senior airport security official, Seaman Book and CDC are also used as crew transit visas. If personnel working in merchant navy, vessel or cruise pass through different countries during travel, then Seaman Book can be used as a transit visa. At the same time, personnel going to join duty at their port also use Seaman Book and CDC as visa. If the travel is personal and not for official purpose, then the passenger will need a passport and visa of the concerned country.
