A crowd of air travelers has gathered at the airport. Passengers are comfortably enjoying tea and coffee at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport. The name of this cafe is Udaan Yatri Cafe. The government has started this facility under a pilot project.
In the first month itself, about 900 customers are coming to India’s first ‘affordable’ airport food outlet every day. The government had made preparations to create economy zones at airports. Now these economy zones are going to start soon in other airports as well. Affordable tea, water, snacks are available in this economy zone. However, seating arrangements have not been made here like in a restaurant.
How cheap are things here?
In this cafe built at the airport, tea and other food items including water are available at a much cheaper rate than other stalls. Tea is available at this cafe for Rs 10. Here, a water bottle is also given for Rs 10. Coffee, sweets and samosas are available for Rs 20. This cafe has been started by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India. Let us tell you that passengers had complained many times about the expensive food items at the airport. Passengers said that at some places in the airport, up to 200 percent more fee is charged than outside restaurants. In such a situation, this facility has been started.
Minister happy with the response
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu inaugurated this cafe on 21 December last year. He is very happy with the response being received by ‘Udaan Yatri Cafe’. He wrote on social media platform X that since the day I took oath as the Civil Aviation Minister, my mission is to make air travel more affordable and accessible to every Indian. The Udaan Yatri Cafe at Kolkata Airport is an important step in that direction.
Survey report on airport food?
A recent survey found that 60 percent of air passengers believe that food items at the airport are very expensive. The survey said that the price of a samosa at the airport can be more than Rs 200, while coffee or tea is sold for Rs 200-300. This price is many times higher than the food shops in malls or other public places.
