Air India Free Baggage Limit: Tata Group-owned airline Air India has changed its free baggage policy. As part of several initiatives by the Tata Group to bring the airline, which is running at a loss of more than Rs 50,000 crore, back on track, Air India has reduced the maximum free baggage allowance for its lowest fare category. Air India has reduced the maximum free baggage allowance from 20 kg to 15 kg.
Information issued in notification
Passengers flying on Air India in ‘Economy Comfort’ and ‘Comfort Plus’ fare categories will be allowed to carry 15 kg of check-in baggage, the airline said in a notification to travel agents. The new free salary limit came into effect from Thursday.
Tata acquired in 2022
Let us tell you that Tata Group bought Air India in the year 2022. Before privatization, the airline used to give a free baggage allowance of 25 kg, which was reduced to 20 kg last year. Now Air India’s free baggage limit has become equal to other airlines. However, other low-budget airlines like IndiGo, which allow passengers to carry one bag.
Unlike them, Air India will allow its passengers to carry multiple bags. At the same time, the civil aviation regulator DGCA has ordered that airlines should allow passengers to carry a minimum of 15 kg of free check-in bags.
Passengers paying higher fares will be able to carry more luggage
Air India will allow passengers paying higher fares under ‘Economy Flex’ to carry 25 kg of hand luggage and will also provide them other facilities like no-change fee on their tickets.
Air India said this
An Air India spokesperson said that the difference in fares between ‘Comfort Plus’ and ‘Flex’ on routes like Delhi-Mumbai will be around Rs 1,000, but there will be 10 kg of extra luggage, zero change or cancellation fee, more loyalty points and free options. The price offered for a better choice of seats is around Rs 9,000. Let us tell you that last year Tata launched several fare brackets to reduce the airline’s losses.
This much charge will have to be paid for overloading!
Let us tell you that Air India charges Rs 600 per kg on excess luggage from passengers, which also includes GST charges. Passengers can carry 10 kg of luggage with them on the plane, but if their luggage is more than this, then they will have to add it to the check-in baggage.
