Beer Price Hike: The Telangana government has allowed Telangana Beverages Corporation Limited (TGBCL) to increase beer prices by 15%. This decision has been taken following the request of the Brewers Association of India (BAI).
Earlier, United Breweries Limited (UBL) had announced to stop supplying beer to Telangana Beverages Corporation on January 8. The company said that there was no revision in beer prices since 2019-20, due to which they were incurring huge losses in the state. Also, the company also claimed that Telangana Beverages Corporation owes payment for previous beer supplies, although they did not give correct information about it. Later, UBL started supplying beer again.
Government’s decision welcomed
BAI said, “This increase is less than the cost of production or the expectations of the industry, but we welcome it as it shows that the government is concerned about the viability of the business and has fulfilled its promise.”
Demand for market-based policy
BAI Director General Vinod Giri said that “market-based system is beneficial for all, and we will continue to communicate with the government to adopt this policy.”
He further said, “We have full faith in the leadership of Chief Minister Reddy and we hope that the outstanding payments for beer supplies between February and August 2024 will also be resolved soon.”
Giri also said that Telangana is an important state for the beer industry. Locally produced beer has a major economic impact on the state’s supply chain, employment, ancillary industries, logistics and hospitality sector.
