NEET Exam: Last year, the NEET exam was conducted on 13 September amid strict precautions in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 13.66 lakh candidates appeared in the examination, out of which 7,71,500 had qualified.
New Delhi. The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking postponement of the NEET exam to be held on September 12. In fact, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the writ petition, in which there was a demand to conduct the NEET UG Exam 2021 on some other date.
The petitioner had said that the exam date is clashing with the dates of CBSE compartment, private, correspondence exams. But, the Supreme Court said that the NEET exam will be conducted on its scheduled time on the upcoming Sunday, September 12.
The court said that more than 16 lakh students appear in the NEET examination and the examination cannot be postponed on the plea of only a few students. A bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice CT Ravi Kumar said, ‘We will not hear this petition. We do not want a situation of uncertainty. Let the exam take place.’
Earlier, on September 3, the National Testing Agency had clarified to the bench that those students will also be able to appear in the NEET examination, whose results have not been released yet. NTA had said that the examination result will be required at the time of counseling, not before that. Advocate Sumanth Nakula had filed a petition seeking postponement of the examination in the Supreme Court.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical courses will be held on 12 September. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made this announcement on 12 July. Pradhan tweeted, “NEET-UG 2021 will be conducted across the country on September 12 following the COVID-19 norms. He said, “Masks will be provided to the examinees at the center to ensure compliance with the Kovid-19 rules. There will be different timings for entry and exit, contactless registration, proper cleanliness, seating arrangement with social distancing etc. will be ensured.
The Education Minister also said that the number of cities where the examination will be conducted has been increased from 155 to 198 to ensure that social distancing is followed. This time the number of examination centers will also be increased as against 3862 centers of the previous examination. After the amendment in the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 last year, 13 All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research located in Puducherry are conducting entrance examinations for MBBS courses through NEET. The exam will be conducted in 11 languages – English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
