The main accused in the Punjab National Bank scam and fugitive Mehul Choksi, who is in jail in Dominica, has suffered a major setback. Dominica High Court rejects Mehul Choksi’s bail plea. News agency ANI quoted local media as saying that the High Court refused to grant him bail on the ground that there is a risk of his escape.
In an earlier hearing, the Dominica High Court had adjourned the hearing on the bail plea of fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi till June 11. Choksi had approached the High Court after the magistrate rejected the bail plea. The petition was filed by a team of local lawyers of Choksi.
According to media reports, the counsel for the government side opposed the bail plea and said that Choksi can flee the country. After this, the judge adjourned the hearing on the matter till June 11. The High Court was also hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by Choksi’s legal team and its hearing was also adjourned.
On May 23, Choksi went missing from Antigua and Barbuda under mysterious circumstances and was caught for illegally entering the neighboring country of Dominica. He has been accused of illegal entry. He has been living as a citizen in Antigua since 2018. However, Mehul’s lawyers allege that he has been kidnapped and taken to Dominica.
