What was the event

On August 16, 2016, 19 people died after consuming poisonous liquor at Khajurbani locality at Gopalganj, the district headquarters. Six people lost their eyesight. The officials were stunned as soon as the information was received about the incident. On the instructions of the senior officials, the police raided the Khajurbani locality on the night of 16 August. During this period, huge amounts of liquor were recovered. In the raids that lasted for hours, liquor was recovered from the houses of illegal liquor businessmen and the surrounding areas. A case was filed in the city police station on the statement of the then police station BP Alok. In this, Khajurbani ward number 25 resident Chhathu Pasi, Kanhaiya Pasi, Laljhari Devi, Kailasho Devi, Nagina Pasi, Lalbabu Pasi, Rajesh Pasi, Sanoj Pasi, Rita Devi, Sanjay Chaudhary, Ranjay Chaudhary, Munna Chaudhary, Indu Devi and Eclipse Passi were named as accused.

While giving the verdict, the court of Second Additional District and Sessions Judge cum Special Judge (Product) Lavkush Kumar, resident of Khajurbani Ward No. 25, Chhatu Pasi, Kanhaiya Pasi, Nagina Pasi, Lalbabu Pasi, Rajesh Pasi, Sanoj Pasi, Sanjay Chaudhary, Ranjay Chaudhary and Munna Chaudhary sentenced to death. In this case, Laljhari Devi, Kailasho Devi, Rita Devi and Indu Devi were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Methyl was found in alcohol

He was sent for forensic examination after a large quantity of liquor was recovered from Khajurbani locality. Upon investigation, it was found that the alcohol contained methyl. After this, the police had surrendered the charge sheet to the court on this basis.

Seven people testified during trial

Special Public Prosecutor (Product) Ravi Bhushan Srivastava said that a total of seven witnesses were produced from the prosecution during the trial. On the basis of the evidence of all the witnesses, the court sentenced nine to death and four convicts to life imprisonment.

On the night of 15 August 2116, after drinking poisonous liquor in Khajurbani locality, suddenly the health of the people started deteriorating. By the morning of 16 August, some of them died. By the evening 19 people had died. Six people lost their eyesight in this incident. After this scandal, the administration became vigilant and raids were carried out in Khajurbani locality after increasing the activeness of the senior officials. After the seizure of alcohol in this raid, it was confirmed that people died due to the consumption of alcohol in this locality. An FIR was registered against 14 people on the statement of Sadar Inspector Nigam Kumar Verma in the city police station in the case of 19 deaths. 14 people were also involved in this, against whom a case of involvement in illegal liquor business was filed. Trial was going on in the special court in the case of death of 19 people. A petition was filed in the High Court on behalf of the accused party in this regard, After which the trial was banned. The trial was on in the second case filed in the case of seizure of liquor and death of people due to drinking the same liquor. Punishment was pronounced in this case.
