CAA Website live: Website launched to take citizenship under CAA, apply this way

Citizenship Amendment Act Apply: After the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 under CAA, it has started being criticized by the opposition. Many questions might be arising in the minds of people about minority citizens who came after being displaced from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to get Indian citizenship.

CAA website goes live: As soon as the CAA notification was issued late on Monday evening, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 came into force in the country. The Central Government has taken this step just 1-2 months before the Lok Sabha elections. In such a situation, it is also being criticized from the opposition. Opposition parties are calling it politically motivated. Amidst all this, various kinds of questions might be arising in people’s minds regarding this law. This is especially important for those minorities who have come to India after being displaced from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and want citizenship here. Without further ado, the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday launched a portal for people eligible to apply for Indian citizenship. Home Ministry spokesperson said that persons eligible under CAA-2019 can apply for citizenship on this portal. The process will be completely online. A mobile app ‘CAA-2019’ will also be released soon to facilitate application through mobile ‘app’. How to apply for Indian citizenship on the web portal?

  • Application for Indian citizenship can be made by visiting the website https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/ issued by the Union Home Ministry. You can also know the status of the application through this website. The final decision of the application will be informed to you through email and SMS.
  • After this, a hard copy of the application form will have to be submitted to the office of the District Magistrate or District Magistrate of the place where you live. If you live outside India, a copy of the application must be submitted to the Consular General of India.
  • After submitting the application form on your behalf to the District Magistrate’s office, the District Magistrate will send that form to the State Government within 60 days along with his report. After this, the state government will have to send your application to the central government within 30 days of receiving the report of the District Magistrate. The Central Government will give the final decision on granting Indian citizenship to the concerned applicant.

What documents are required to apply-

  • A copy of passport issued by the Government of Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan.
  • Registration certificate or residence permit issued by the Foreigner Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) or Foreigner Registration Officer (FRO) in India.
  • School certificate or any other educational certificate issued by a school, college, board of education or university in Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan.
  • Any identity document issued by the Government of Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan or any other government body or government agencies of these countries.
  • Any license or certificate issued by a government authority of Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan.
  • Documents relating to land or tenancy in Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan.
  • Documents proving that one of the applicant’s parents, grandparents or great-grandparents is or was a citizen of Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan.
  • Any other document issued by a government authority or government agency of Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan proving that the applicant is a resident of Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan.

Additionally, the applicant may also require the following documents to prove that they came to India on or before December 31, 2014. These documents are-

  • Copy of visa and copy of immigration stamp affixed on arrival in India
  • Registration certificate or residence permit issued by the Foreigner Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) or Foreigner Registration Officer (FRO) in India
  • Slip issued to such persons by the enumeration authorities in India during the census.
  • License or certificate or permit issued by the Government of India such as Aadhar Card and Driving License
  • Applicant’s ration card issued in India
  • Any letter issued to the applicant by a government office or court bearing a government stamp
  • Birth certificate of the applicant issued in India
  • Record of land or tenancy or registered rental agreement in India
  • PAN card issue document bearing the date of issue
  • Any other document issued by the Central Government or State Government or any public sector undertaking or any financial institution such as banks or any other public authority
  • Certificate issued by an elected member of any rural or urban body or its officer or revenue officer
  • Account and transaction statements in respect of and issued by banks (including private banks) or post office accounts
  • Insurance policies issued in the name of the applicant by insurance companies in India
  • Electricity connection papers or electricity bill or other utility bill in the name of the applicant
  • Records or proceedings of a court or tribunal in India to which the applicant is a party
  • Document showing service or employment under any employer in India, Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF)/General Provident Fund/Pension/Employees’ State Insurance Corporation
  • School leaving certificate of the applicant issued in India
  • Educational certificate issued by school or college or board or university or government institution
  • Municipal business license issued to the applicant
  • Marriage certificate
