Avengers: Endgame skipped over what would have been an interesting Captain America story. Chris Evans’ return could fix that in Phase 4.
Captain America’s MCU return could show his Avengers: Endgame story which the movie chose to skip. The movie never explored Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) completing his mission to put back the Infinity Stones back, which is a missed opportunity ripe with potential.
In Avengers: Endgame, Captain America was the Avenger entrusted with returning all six Infinity Stones back to their proper place in the timeline. As soon as he left, he reappeared on a park bench as an elderly man. The reveal that he decided to stay in the past with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) marked the end of his MCU journey. However, it appears that Marvel may be opening the door for him to somehow come back. It’s being reported that Marvel and Evans are working out a deal for the actor to reprise his Captain America role in two MCU projects. Evans is downplaying the news, while Marvel is staying quiet on the report.
If it is true that the character is coming back, then the most important question revolving around his return would of course be related to when his Phase 4 role will be set. Instead of undoing (and ruining) Captain America’s ending, Marvel may have plans to show parts of his story that haven’t been fully explored yet. Arguably the most exciting unseen event in Captain America’s life is one that happened offscreen. Presumably to make Cap suddenly appearing as an old man even more dramatic and shocking, Avengers: Endgame didn’t show Steve putting the Stones back. This was a bit disappointing, but the scene playing out the way it did was understandable, given that his reappearance in the present needed to be abrupt and surprising.
In a short Disney+ miniseries or special (similar to what Marvel is doing with the Guardians of the Galaxy at Christmas in 2022), Marvel can focus directly on Steve’s adventure with the Infinity Stones, showing key elements like what Captain America did with Mjolnir. If it was shown in Endgame, it likely would have wrapped up in five minutes or less, but a project centered on this could greatly expand on it in a fun way. Also, giving this its own MCU project would allow Marvel to capitalize on the storytelling potential that would come with sending Steve on a solo, time-travel mission.

Doing it this way could work because it would make sense if putting some of the Stones back took some effort and time. For instance, Steve could have been captured by the Asgardians or forced into a fight with them while returning the Reality Stone. He may have encountered similar problems putting the other Stones back as well. There’s also the matter of the Red Skull (Ross Marquand) and the Soul Stone. Due to the way Avengers: Endgame framed Cap’s arc, fans were denied a chance at seeing what had to be a fascinating reunion between Captain America and his old enemy from World War II. The Red Skull may not be the ambitious HYDRA leader he once was, but even so, it would have been interesting to see what they said to each other when Steve showed up on Vormir. Marvel could properly explain this and more if it delves into Steve’s hidden Endgame story in Phase 4.
