To get a confirmed ticket, one has to book the ticket well in advance. Even after this, the tickets of many passengers are in the waiting list. If your ticket is also waiting then there is a way to get it confirmed immediately. You can get it confirmed through HO Quota (High Official Quota) of Railways. Yes, to do this you have to fulfill some conditions. Although HO quota is for railway officers, VIPs and bureaucrats, but in some circumstances a common passenger can also avail it.

This quota does not have to be mentioned while booking tickets. HO quota can be applied on tickets which have been booked in general quota but are in the waiting list. Some seats are reserved under HO quota, hence if you apply for it, the ticket gets confirmed very quickly.

Although this quota is for special persons, but under some special circumstances even a common passenger can take advantage of the HO quota and get his ticket confirmed. The essential condition to avail the benefit of this quota is that the journey of the passenger must be essential. He has to prove this through documents.

To apply for HO quota, a common traveler is required to submit an application (Emergency Quota (EQ) Form) to the Chief Reservation Supervisor along with all documents proving the emergency situation one day before the date of travel. This application should also be signed by a gazetted officer. After receiving the application, its information is sent to the divisional/zonal office and then after approval, the ticket is confirmed.
