Even though there was a fierce fight between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the West Bengal assembly elections, the two parties jointly eliminated their shared rival Congress in its old stronghold Murshidabad and Malda districts. The Congress dominated both these districts during the 34 years of the Left’s rule and also for the ten years of the Trinamool Congress, but its account was not even opened in this election.
Murshidabad is considered the stronghold of Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, the president of the state party, while Malda was once considered to be the stronghold of the late Congress leader ABA Gani Khan Chaudhary. The Trinamool won 26 seats in a total of 32 assembly constituencies in Murshidabad and Malda districts, while the saffron party swept the remaining six seats. The election in two seats in Murshidabad has been canceled due to the demise of the candidates. In Murshidabad, the Congress won 14 of the 20 seats in the 2016 elections and won seven of the 12 seats in Malda.
As an ally of the Congress, the CPI (M) won four seats in Murshidabad and one seat in Malda in the 2016 elections. The Congress and the Left party did not get a single seat in 2021 not only in these two districts but in the entire state.
Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee held several rallies in Murshidabad and Malda districts and emphasized her stand against the CAA. At the same time, the BJP tried to woo voters by promising employment, education and better road connectivity in these districts.
