Cyclone Dana Alert: IMD issues warning of heavy rains with thunderstorms in these states, low pressure area expected to form

The Bengal government is on high alert regarding the cyclone Dana which is going to develop in the Bay of Bengal. According to the Meteorological Department, the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal will take the form of a cyclone by next Wednesday. As a result, heavy rains are forecast in the coastal districts of Bengal. Heavy rains may also occur in the neighboring state of Odisha.

Rainfall Update: The Bengal government is on high alert regarding the cyclone ‘Dana’ which is going to arise in the Bay of Bengal. According to the Meteorological Department, the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal will take the form of a cyclone by next Wednesday. As a result, heavy rains are forecast in the coastal districts of Bengal. Torrential rains may also occur in the neighboring state of Odisha.

Rain is expected to start in various districts of Bengal from Tuesday. Rains may continue till Saturday. Fishermen have been prohibited from going to the sea. East Medinipur and South 24 Parganas districts are likely to receive the most rain. State Chief Secretary Manoj Pant has given necessary instructions in this regard to the officials of the districts likely to be affected.

Storm will come over the Bay of Bengal by October 23

The IMD said on Sunday that a cyclonic storm is likely to come over the Bay of Bengal by October 23, which will affect the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal.

An upper air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea is likely to intensify into a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours, a special weather bulletin said.

The storm will also hit Odisha-West Bengal coasts

It said the weather system is expected to move in a west-northwest direction and intensify into a depression by the morning of October 22 and into a cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal by October 23.

Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and reach northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts by the morning of October 24.

Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha and West Bengal coasts from October 23 to 25, the IMD has advised fishermen to return to the coast by October 21. The system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said.

Odisha to receive rain

He said parts of Odisha are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from October 23. ‘Some places in the coastal region may receive 20 cm rainfall on October 24-25. The spell intensity may increase from 20 to 30 cm and even above 30 at some places,’ he said, adding that the IMD has not made any forecast on the location and intensity of the landfall. Light to moderate rains are also likely over West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, the report said.
