The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is all set to enhance the travel experience with a new virtual card system. Here are some important things to know about the Delhi Metro Virtual Card.
Delhi Metro has played a major role in transforming public transport in India. It introduced a modern, air-conditioned and eco-friendly transport system that has improved mass transportation not just in Delhi but across the country. With a network spanning about 392.44 km and 288 stations, including Rapid Metro routes in Noida-Greater Noida and Gurugram, Delhi Metro has set a high benchmark. It completed this massive project faster than expected and within budget.
Now, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is all set to further improve the travel experience with a new virtual card system. This upcoming feature, available on the Momentum 2.0 mobile app, will revolutionise the way commuters pay for rides on the Delhi Metro. Here is everything you need to know about the Delhi Metro Virtual Card.
What is Delhi Metro Virtual Card?
DMRC is introducing a virtual smart card system. Through this, commuters will be able to pay for their Delhi Metro rides using their smartphones. It is expected to launch by late August or early September. This new feature will eliminate the need for cash or physical smart cards. Instead, passengers can use their phones to manage and pay for their trips.
“We are planning to introduce QR for stored value. It will be like a card which will not be limited to a single journey. It will also reduce the number of paper prints,” DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar told PTI.
Benefits of the new virtual card
The new virtual card has many benefits:
- Convenience: No need to carry cash or physical smart cards.
- Just use your phone to pay.
- Eco-friendly: Reduces the need for paper tickets and physical smart cards. Which benefits the environment.
- Safe: Your balance is stored securely in the app. Even if you lose your phone, you can log in on another device to access your funds.
How it works
At present, the Momentum 2.0 app only gives QR code tickets valid for a single trip. However, with the introduction of the virtual smart card, the same QR code will be valid for multiple trips. The fare for each ride will be automatically deducted from your app wallet, making the process seamless and hassle-free.
Payment and security features
The virtual card will work just like the physical smart cards available at metro counters. Commuters can recharge their digital wallet on the DMRC app and use the value accumulated in it to generate QR codes for their trips. The app will support various payment methods to recharge your wallet. And even if your phone is lost or damaged, your balance will be safe.
Streamlined travel experience
The virtual smart card system aims to simplify travel for everyday commuters by eliminating the need for a new ticket or physical pass for every trip. It integrates seamlessly with existing features including the Delhi Metro QR ticket option available through Amazon Pay. Passengers can select their destination station, pay and get their mobile QR ticket instantly.
