New Delhi. Delhi Police has busted a new style of theft, which everyone is surprised to hear. In the last one year, this clever thief caught 200 flights within 110 days and traveled thousands of kilometers and stole valuables of many people on the plane itself. On the complaint of a woman, this thief was finally busted and even the policemen are surprised to hear about his actions.

In fact, last month a woman going from Hyderabad to Delhi claimed that jewelery worth Rs 7 lakh was stolen from her handbag. After this, the police also received a complaint from an American man, in which it was told that valuables worth Rs 20 lakh were stolen from his cabin bag. After these two complaints, the police searched several hours of footage from all the airports and arrested this thief named Rajesh Kapoor.

How the vicious thief was caught

After scanning the CCTV footage of Delhi, Hyderabad and Amritsar airports, the police arrested Rajesh Kapoor from Paharganj area of Delhi. The police were surprised at how he managed to escape and commit thefts in airports, which are among the safest areas of the country, for a year. During police interrogation, Rajesh Kapoor told that he targeted passengers taking connecting flights.

For example, this woman traveling from Hyderabad to Delhi in April had to catch a connecting Air India flight to America from Delhi’s IGI Airport. Similarly, American resident Varjinderjit Singh was traveling from Amritsar to Frankfurt, Germany and had a connecting flight from Delhi.

According to Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner (DCP) Usha Rangrani, he chose elderly and female passengers as his targets and kept an eye on their behavior at the airport. He used to follow the bags to get information about the valuables inside them and used to read the information given on the baggage declaration slip very cleverly.

Rajesh used to sit on the seat next to the victim

Police said that they mostly saw accused Rajesh talking at the boarding gate. He used to monitor the behavior of his targets there. Police said the accused used to request the airline to change his seat so that he could sit next to the passenger. Police said he would often sit near that passenger, and then steal their luggage by pretending to set the bag in the overhead section.

Rajesh owns a guest house ‘Ricky Deluxe’ in Paharganj, close to New Delhi Railway Station. He himself lived on the third floor of the guest house and the rest of the floors were for customers. Police said he also had a money exchange business and a mobile repair shop in Delhi. He stole valuables from the bags of mostly female passengers flying from many airports like Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Amritsar.

Police said that Rajesh, who used to steal in flights, earlier used to steal in trains. However, after being caught there, he remained calm for a few days and later decided to plan a robbery at the airport.
