DigiLockar: How an app changed our way of keeping documents

Since the arrival of DigiLockar, it has been possible to keep paper-based documents digitally and track them.

India is making a big leap in the direction of digitalization and the government is playing an important role in this change. Under Rule 9A of IT rules, DigiLockar allows users to store and access their documents digitally. The government has recognized the documents present in DigiLockar as the original documents.




Several agencies have also benefited from the Digital India Corporation’s DigiLockar campaign under the Ministry of Electronics and IT Ministry.

Paperless Governance: Reducing the use of paper-based documents has reduced administrative burden and has encouraged paperless governance.

Verification time reduced: Through DigiLockar, now agencies see e-documents in real-time and their verification is done. In this case, the time taken for verification has reduced.

Secure Authentication: This allows secure exchange of documents between the issuer and the verifier on the basis of authentication.

  • You can sign-up on DigiLocker by entering your details at https://digilocker.gov.in/.
  • Register your mobile number for authentication
  • Verify your mobile number through OTP.
  • Select username and password.
  • Get confirmation of DigiLocker on your registered mobile number and email id.

Understanding the major sections of DigiLocker

To make document exchange convenient and traceable, your e-documents on DigiLockar are divided into 3 groups and can be accessed with one click.

Issue Documents: Documents issued by the government and DigiLockar registered agency. These documents are uploaded with the consent of the user.

Uploaded Documents: Self uploaded documents which can be regularly updated and shared with the concerned authorities.

Shared Documents: Documents shared with authorities via email.

How Secure is DigiLocker?

In recent times, there has been increased awareness about the importance of data. In such a situation, it is a big responsibility to protect the data of a person and an institution. Several security measures have been taken in this regard in DigiLockar.

Data Encryption: It uses a 256-bit secure socket layer so that the data exchange is in encrypted form.

Aadhaar Based Authentication: To access e-documents issued by agencies, users have to go through Aadhaar biometric authentication and OTP authentication.

Essentials of Consent Based Document Exchange: Agencies or verifiers can access documents stored in DigiLockar only if they have the user’s consent. Users get real-time updates on account activities via email or message. In such a situation, he can raise this issue in front of the concerned officials in case of any disturbance.

Important agencies to be associated with it

This two-way document exchange platform is not only becoming popular among individual users, but it is also popular among officials of every department. From ministries to state education boards, oil companies to insurance companies, officials are integrating themselves with DigiLockar to make services even better.

Here two such major agency integration is being mentioned, which can make the work of your daily life easier.

1. Digital RC and DL: In partnership with the Ministry of Road Transport, DigiLocker hosts digital driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates of the users. With integration in the National Register, DigiLockar allows users the freedom to access digital RCs and DLs on their devices. Authorities can verify Digital RC and DL.

2. Digital Aadhaar: DigiLockar in partnership with UIDAI empowers users to have real-time access to e-Aadhaar. E-Aadhaar is provided to the users only if they link their DigiLocker with the Aadhaar number. Users can now share the digital base and can also link or integrate it with any other agency.
