During the Kharif Marketing Season 2020-21: Rs 1,20,783 crore paid to 91.89 lakh farmers, the state benefited the most

According to the latest data, there has been an increase of 15.71 percent in paddy procurement this year as compared to last year. During the Kharif Marketing Season 2020-21, the government is procuring Kharif crops.

Paddy procurement continues at the MSP i.e. the Minimum Support Price amidst the ongoing agitation against the central agricultural laws. According to the latest data, there has been an increase of 15.71 percent in paddy procurement this year as compared to last year. During the Kharif Marketing Season 2020-21, the government is procuring Kharif crops from farmers at the minimum support price. In this, the farmers of Punjab have benefited the most. Out of the total procurement, 31.7 percent procurement has been made from the farmers of Punjab alone.

Paddy from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Karnataka, West Bengal and Tripura other than Punjab Is being purchased. As of 13 February 2021, more than 639.74 lakh metric tonnes of paddy has been procured from farmers in these states and union territories, compared to only 552.85 lakh metric tonnes of paddy in the same period last year.

91.89 lakh farmers have been paid

Paddy procurement done so far this year has registered an increase of 15.71 percent over the previous year. Out of the total procurement of 639.74 lakh MT of paddy, Punjab alone has 202.82 lakh MT, which is 31.70 percent of the total purchase. About Rs 1,20,783.48 crore has been paid to the 91.89 lakh farmers on the minimum support price for the paddy purchased so far.

Purchase of pulses and oilseeds also approved

In addition, 51 lakhs under Price Support Scheme (PSS) for Kharif Marketing Season 2020 from states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh based on the proposal received from the states. Procurement of pulses and oilseeds has also been approved for purchase of 92 thousand metric tons of pulses and oilseeds  .

Approval has also been given for the purchase of 1.23 lakh metric tonnes of copra (perennial crop) from the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In addition, 15.87 lakh metric tonnes of pulses and oilseeds were approved for the Rabi marketing season 2020-2021 from Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

If the market rates in the respective states and union territories fall below the MSP during the notified harvest period, these states and Union Territories will be given a price support scheme (PSS) by the Central Nodal Agencies through the designated procurement agencies of the state. Approval will also be given on the proposals for the purchase of pulses, oilseeds and copra crops. This is so that the FAQ grades of these crops can be procured directly from the registered farmers at the minimum support price notified for the year 2020-21.

How much purchase of moong, urad, tur, peanuts till 13 February?

According to a release issued by the ministry, the government has procured 3,09,109.47 MT of moong, urad, tur, groundnut pods and soyabean at MSP prices through its nodal agencies till 13 February 2021. 1,67,618 farmers from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan have earned Rs 1,664.64 crore from this purchase. Similarly, 5,089 MT copra (perennial crop) has been procured from the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

During this period, payment of Rs 52 crore 40 lakh has been made on 13 March 2021 at the minimum support price benefiting 3,961 farmers. In most of the major producing states for copra and urad crops, payments are being made at or above the MSP. The governments of the states and union territories related to them are making necessary arrangements to start procurement by the respective states on the basis of arrival of kharif pulses and oilseed crops.
