Electricity Rates Hike: Nowadays everyone is troubled by the rising prices of electricity bills. Meanwhile, the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh is preparing to shock the electricity consumers. If this rule is implemented, then electricity will become expensive in Uttar Pradesh. Actually, Time of Day (TOD) tariff can now be implemented on domestic consumers in the state. Under this, different electricity prices will be applicable for day and night. Due to which the expenses of electricity consumers are expected to increase by 20 percent. A proposal has been made to implement this system in the draft of Multi Year Tariff Regulation 2025. At present, this system is applicable only to consumers of heavy and small industries category.
Necessary changes have been made by the Central Government in the Electricity (Customer Rights) Rules, 2020. In this, it has been said to implement the system of Time of Day (TOD) tariff. It has a rule to keep the electricity rate of day and night different. This system has been implemented on consumers of small and heavy industry category. Preparations have been made to implement it on all consumers from April 1, 2025.
Time of Day (TOD) tariff may be implemented in Uttar Pradesh in April
It is being said that if everything goes well, this proposal can be approved. In such a situation, Time of Day (TOD) tariff can be implemented on all electricity consumers except farmers from April 1. Therefore, it is almost certain that the price of electricity will increase. Under the new tariff, the price of electricity will be expensive in all the districts of UP during peak hours i.e. from 5 pm to late night as compared to the day. According to a figure, there are a total of 3.45 crore electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh. Out of which 2.85 crore are domestic consumers. Those who will be directly affected by it. There are 15 lakh farmer consumers in the state. These farmers have been kept out of the TOD tariff plan.
There was a preparation to implement TOD tariff in 2023
An attempt was made to implement the TOD system in the year 2023 as well. But there was opposition from the Consumer Council. Along with this, there was a threat of knocking the door of the court. In such a situation, the state government came on the back foot. This tariff was put on hold. Now preparations are being made to implement it again from April 2025. In this matter, the President of the Consumer Council, Awadhesh Kumar Verma, says that this TOD tariff will not be allowed to be implemented under any circumstances. If this happens, a legal battle will be fought.
