730 Day Parental Leave: The Central Government said in Parliament that women and single men government employees are eligible for 730 days leave to take care of children. Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said that the employees are eligible for Child Care Leave under Rule 43-C of the Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1972 for a maximum period of 730 days during the entire service.

- Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh told the Lok Sabha that women government employees can take 730 days leave for child care during their service.
- The minister said that like women, single men (widowers or divorcees) can also take 730 days leave during their service to take care of their children.
- Female Government servants or single male Government servants appointed to civil services and posts are also eligible for Child Care Leave (CCL) under Rule 43-C of the Central Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1972.
- In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Minister Jitendra Singh said that the child care rule provides for 730 days of child care leave for the two eldest children up to the age of 18 years.
- The minister told that if the child of a female or male government employee is disabled, then there is no age limit in this case. In relation to taking leave for the care of a disabled child, the government servant will have to submit the certificate of dependency on that child and other relevant documents.
- Till now, men were entitled to 15 days leave within six months of the birth or adoption of a child. In 2022, the women’s panel proposed to increase paternity leave to reduce the burden on mothers.
- Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang had said a few weeks ago that his government would provide 12 months of maternity leave and one month of paternity leave to its employees. CM Tamang had said that this benefit would help government employees to take better care of their children and families.
- On the other hand, if we talk about other countries, Spain allows 16 weeks of paternity leave, while three months in Sweden, 164 days of leave are allowed for both mother and father in Finland.
- There is no paternity leave under federal law in the US, but Canada provides five additional weeks of leave (for a total of 40 weeks) for the second parent.
- The UK allows shared parental leave of up to 50 weeks. Singapore also has a rule that gives employees two weeks of paid paternity leave.
