UAN can be generated directly by the employee himself through UMANG App and e-UAN card PDF can be downloaded by the employee, thereby eliminating his dependency on the employer.
EPFO Update: There is good news for the employees of the Employees Provident Fund Organization. EPFO has started the facility of face authentication technology to generate and activate Universal Account Number (UAN). Now employees can create their own UAN with Aadhaar face authentication technology by using the Umang app.
Not only this, members who already have UAN but have not activated it yet, can now easily activate their UAN through the Umang app. Let us tell you that in the financial year 2024-25, 1,26,56,127 UANs were generated, but only 44,68,236 i.e. about 35% could be activated.

Till now, to generate UAN, the employer used to send the employee’s data to EPFO and the data was verified with Aadhaar, although the Aadhaar details were valid but there were errors in matters like father’s name, mobile number or date of birth, due to which the employees had to update the data later for claim or other benefits.
In many cases like this, EPFO was not able to contact the employee due to wrong mobile number or no information given. Apart from this, activating UAN through Aadhaar OTP verification on EPFO member portal was a separate process which used to create confusion when completed by the member, in such a situation, now EPFO has made it easier with enthusiasm.
EPFO: These benefits will be available from Umang
- 100 percent verification of Aadhaar and user will be done by face authentication.
- All the user data is pre-filled directly from the Aadhaar database.
- The user’s mobile number is matched with the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.
- The task of activating UAN on the EPFO portal is completed during the process of creating it.
- UAN can be created directly by the employee himself and the e-UAN card PDF can be downloaded by the employee, thereby eliminating his dependence on the employer.
- At the time of employment, the employee can submit the e-UAN card PDF and a copy of the UAN to the employer to join EPFO.

- Download and install AadhaarFaceRD App from Playstore
- Open UMANG APP and go to “UAN Allotment and Activation” under UAN Services through Face Auth
- Enter Aadhaar number and mobile number linked with Aadhaar (It will be matched with mobile registered with Aadhaar to send OTP)
- Tick the checkbox for consent Verify the received OTP
- Camera will be able to capture live photo image- When the color outline of the image changes from red to green it means image capture is successful (It is same as when one uses DigiYatra app)
- After matching with the image in Aadhaar database, UAN will be generated and sent to mobile by SMS
- After generating UAN, employee can download UAN card from Umang App or Member Portal (UAN gets activated automatically in Member Portal)
What is UAN Number
- UAN is a 12-digit number that is provided to every member of the EPFO.
- UAN is a 12-digit unique number that is provided to every employee contributing to the Employees’ Provident Fund.
- This unique number is generated and given by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).
- The Ministry of Labour and Employment certifies UAN under the instructions of the Government of India.
- Every employee who is a member of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is allotted a Universal Account Number (UAN).
- It is used by the employee to check PF account balance and other details related to EPF.
