Delhi: FASTag has been made mandatory on all vehicles in India. To give relief to the people, its last date has been extended many times before, but now the government has clearly said that the date of fasting will not be extended. This would mean that by February 15 all vehicles would have to be fitted with FASTag.
What is FASTag
The FASTag is a sticker that is affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle after which Toll Plaza does not have to stop the vehicle for any cash transaction. FASTag works through RFID (Radio frequency identification) technology. On passing through Toll Plaza the toll amount is deducted directly from the account linked to FASTag.
When did FASTag start
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) introduced FASTag in the year 2019 after which FASTag’s current share in toll payments has increased from about 75 to 80 per cent according to NHAI. This means that out of every 100 vehicles, around 80 vehicles are paying at the toll plaza using FASTag. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has said in response to a question that the transaction from FASTag in India has reached 73.36% in December 2020 and it is expected that after February 15 it will reach 100%.
