The Mahayuti government of Maharashtra has taken a big decision regarding Fastag. The government has made Fastag mandatory on every vehicle from April 1, 2025. Fastag is used for tax collection while passing through toll booths. Such a decision was already taken but it was not implemented 100 percent. A cash counter was kept.
FASTag: The Maharashtra Cabinet decided to make FASTag mandatory for all vehicles in the state from April 1, 2025. FASTag is an RFID passive tag used to make toll payments from a prepaid or savings/current account linked directly to the customers.
It is affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle and enables the customer to drive through the toll plaza without stopping for any toll payment.
How does FASTag work?
The toll fare is deducted directly from the customer’s linked account. FASTag is also vehicle specific and once it is affixed on a vehicle, it cannot be transferred to another vehicle. FASTag can be purchased from any member bank of NETC. If the FASTag is linked to a prepaid account, it has to be recharged/topped up as per the customer’s usage.
Benefits of FASTag
- If sufficient balance is not maintained by the customer, FASTag is blacklisted at the toll plaza.
- In such a situation, if the customer travels through a toll plaza without recharging, he will not be able to avail NETC services and will have to pay the toll fare through cash.
- The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program to meet the electronic tolling requirements of the Indian market.
- FASTag is a device that uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to make toll payments directly while the vehicle is moving.
- FASTag (RFID tag) is affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle and enables the customer to make toll payments directly from the account linked to the FASTag.
Time will be saved
FASTag offers benefits such as cashless payment facility as well as fuel time saving as the customer does not have to stop at the toll plaza.
