Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday reviewed the progress of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) for healthcare workers playing a key role in the fight against COVID-19.
New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday reviewed the progress of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP) for healthcare workers playing a key role in the fight against COVID-19. He asked the insurance companies to expeditiously settle the claims under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY).
In a virtual meeting with the heads of insurance companies, the Finance Minister emphasized the need to rationalize the process of documentation required under these schemes to enable faster settlement of claims, an official statement said. Sitharaman said that so far 419 claims have been settled under the PMGKP scheme and Rs 209.5 crore has been deposited in the accounts of the nominees.
The Finance Minister said that a new system has been decided to solve the issue of delay in sending documents by the states. Under this, a simple certificate by the District Magistrate and its confirmation by the Nodal State Health Authority will suffice for settlement of claims. Sitharaman appreciated the efforts of New India Assurance Company. This company is responsible for managing this plan.
He cited the example of Ladakh where the claim has been settled within four hours of getting the District Magistrate’s certificate. The Finance Minister directed the states to settle the COVID-19 claims of health workers on priority basis. A total of 4.65 lakh claims worth Rs 9,307 crore have been settled under PMJJBY.
The Finance Minister also reviewed the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBI). A total of 82,660 claims worth Rs 1,629 crore have been settled till May 31, 2021. The Finance Minister appreciated the recent efforts by insurance companies and banks for speedy settlement of claims. He said that during the pandemic, the officials of the insurance companies should show sympathy towards the nominee of the deceased insured.
