UGC has now removed the mandatory PhD requirement for Assistant Professor recruitment. The commission has extended this exemption for the next 2 years. According to the rules issued, the requirement of PhD will be abolished till July 2023.
University Grants Commission, UGC has once again changed the qualifications prescribed for Assistant Professor recruitment in various universities of the country. In view of the announcement made by the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, UGC has now removed the mandatory PhD requirement for Assistant Professor recruitment. The commission has extended this exemption for the next 2 years. According to the rules issued, the requirement of PhD will be abolished till July 2023.
As a step towards facilitating recruitment in various universities, the UGC has decided to extend the date of application of compulsory PhD from July 01, 2021 to July 1, 2023. However, UGC NET qualification will still remain mandatory for Assistant Professor recruitment.
According to the notice issued by the commission, “The apex body of higher education UGC has amended the rules regarding minimum qualifications and standards in higher education for the appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges. PhD degree will not be a mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor in the department.”
The UGC further said, “This amendment has been published in Part-III, Section-4 of the Gazette of India in Hindi and in English, which can be downloaded from the official websites.”
The decision has been taken keeping in mind the problems arising due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The official notification has been issued after the announcement of relaxation of 1 year on PhD requirement by the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Most of the top institutes and universities are facing acute shortage of teachers and with this decision these recruitments will be accelerated.
