Notification has been issued regarding making the airbag mandatory for passengers sitting in front of the driver’s seat in vehicles

The government has made airbags mandatory for passengers in front seats of vehicles.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said on Friday that a notification has been issued regarding the mandatory provision of airbags.

“A notification has been issued regarding making the airbag mandatory for the passengers sitting in front of the driver’s seat in the vehicles,” the statement said. This is an important security measure. The committee on road safety of the Supreme Court had suggested about it.

The Ministry said that on the first day of April, 2021 or later, new vehicles manufactured will require airbags for the front seat. In the context of older vehicles, from August 31, 2021, it will be compulsory to install airbags with the front driver seat in the current models. This step will ensure the safety of passengers in the event of an accident.

The Ministry has also given information on the standard quality of these airbags. The Ministry has said that under the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 145, it should be only under the specification given by the Bureau of India Standards (BIS).
