Government sets new limit on wheat storage for shopkeepers, this will help in stopping prices from rising

To control wheat prices, the Central Government has decided to revise the wheat storage limit applicable till March 31, 2025.

The central government on Thursday tightened the wheat storage limit for wholesalers, retailers and processors to keep prices under control. The government also said that there is sufficient stock of food grains in the country. Harvesting of the new wheat crop starts from the end of March. The government said that as per the revised storage limit applicable till March 31, traders / wholesalers can keep only 250 tonnes of wheat. According to the earlier norm, this limit was 1,000 tonnes. The storage limit for retailers has been reduced from five tonnes to four tonnes.

Information will have to be given every Friday

An official statement said, “To control the prices of wheat, the central government has decided to revise the storage limit of wheat applicable till March 31, 2025.” In the context of large chain retailers, the storage limit for each outlet will be four tonnes. Similarly, wheat processors can keep 50 percent of the monthly installed capacity (MIC) till April 2025. All units storing wheat are required to register on the Wheat Stock Limit Portal and report the stock status every Friday. The Department of Food and Public Distribution said that it is keeping a close watch on the wheat stock status to control prices and ensure availability in the country.

Prices of edible oils increased

On the other hand, due to the prices of indigenous oilseeds being lower than the MSP, farmers brought less supply to the markets and due to the demand of the upcoming festivals, all oilseeds prices showed strength in the domestic oilseeds market on Thursday. There is a slight decline in the Malaysia Exchange while the Chicago Exchange is also in the lead. Market sources said that amid the prices of indigenous oilseeds being lower than the MSP, farmers are bringing their produce in less quantity to the markets. Due to the high price of sunflower in the country, its consumption is affected. Similarly, the price of palmolein oil is higher than mustard and soybean this time. In such a situation, there is pressure of supply on cottonseed oil and the demand for this oil is increasing among the companies making snacks.
