Online Scam: You must have seen many such cases of online fraud where scammers trap people and cheat them of money. Scammers trap people by luring them with attractive offers. Often scammers tell people the way to earn money easily and also give them money in the beginning, so that they can win people’s trust. But, later they commit fraud worth lakhs of rupees. Many times fake SIMs are also used in such cases. These fake SIMs are obtained with fake documents.

The government has taken major action to prevent fake SIMs from being sold in the market. The government has returned more than 6 lakh mobile numbers for KYC. These mobile connections will have to be re-verified in 60 days. This step has been taken to prevent fake SIMs from being used by cyber criminals.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has identified around 6.8 lakh mobile connections which are suspected to have been obtained using fake documents. These documents include identity card and address certificate. The department has doubts about the authenticity of these documents.

Government order

The Department of Telecommunications has directed telecom companies (TSP) to immediately re-verify these 6.8 lakh mobile numbers. All telecom companies will have to re-verify these numbers within 60 days. If verification is not done, these numbers will be blocked.

How did this happen?

The government has achieved this success because of mutual cooperation between departments and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. This shows how effective integrated digital platforms can be in preventing the use of fake identities.

Why was this action taken?

The Department of Telecommunications wants to ensure the authenticity of mobile connections and security of digital transactions. That is why the department is getting the verification done again. This will help in reducing cases like online fraud.
