Four million vehicles over 15 years old are racing on the roads of the country. These vehicles are covered under Green Tax. In the case of old vehicles, Karnataka is at the top. 70 lakh such vehicles are racing on the roads of Karnataka. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has digitized the data of such vehicles across the country. However, these do not include Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Lakshadweep. Statistics for these states are not available.
A proposal to impose green tax on such vehicles has already been sent to the states. According to statistics, more than 40 million vehicles are more than 15 years old. Two crore of these vehicles are more than 20 years old. The ministry said that the digital record of the vehicles is based on the centralized vehicle database. This excludes Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Lakshadweep. Uttar Pradesh is at the second place in terms of old polluting vehicles. The number of such vehicles in Uttar Pradesh is 56.54 lakh, out of which 24.55 lakh vehicles are more than 20 years old.
Rajdhani Delhi in third place
The capital Delhi is at the third position with 49.93 lakh vehicles. 35.11 lakh vehicles in Delhi are more than 20 years old. The number of such vehicles is 34.64 lakhs in Kerala, 33.43 lakhs in Tamil Nadu, 25.38 lakhs in Punjab and 22.69 lakhs in West Bengal. In Maharashtra, Odisha, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana, the number of such vehicles is between 17.58 lakh and 12.29 lakh. At the same time, the number of such vehicles in Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Assam, Bihar, Goa, Tripura and Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu are between one lakh and 5.44 lakh.
Proposal has been sent to states
According to statistics, the number of such vehicles in the remaining states is less than one lakh. The government is preparing to impose a green tax on such old vehicles soon for environmental protection and curbing pollution. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had proposed a green tax on old vehicles causing pollution in January this year. This proposal has been sent to the states for discussion. After that it will be formally notified. Presently, some states / UTs are imposing green tax on different rates.
Green tax will be up to 25 percent of the rot tax
Under the proposal, transport vehicles more than eight years old will be taxed at the rate of 10 to 25 percent of road tax at the time of renewal of fitness certification. It is proposed to tax individual vehicles at the time of renewal after 15 years. At the same time, lower green tax will be imposed on public transport vehicles like buses etc. At the same time, it is proposed to impose a higher green tax on vehicles registered in highly polluted cities, equal to 50 percent of the toll.
