GST Returns: Big news! Now these taxpayers will have to file GST annual return, know its last date

Filing of annual GST returns is mandatory for all taxpayers who have taken GST registration at any time during the relevant financial year, Tanushree Roy, indirect tax director, Nangia Andersen India, told ET Bureau.

New Delhi: Every year, some GST taxpayers have to file their annual returns with the help of GSTR-9 or GSTR-9A form. The last date for which is 31 December 2024. GST annual returns can be filed only by those taxpayers whose GSTIN was active during the relevant financial year. Please note that before filing the annual return, the taxpayer has to file all the applicable returns of the relevant financial year i.e. Form GSTR-1/IFF and Form GSTR-3B.

Annual returns are mandatory for these taxpayers

Tanushree Roy, Indirect Tax Director, Nangia Andersen India, told ET Bureau that filing of annual GST returns is mandatory for all taxpayers who have got GST registration at any time during the respective financial year. At the same time, Chartered Accountant Abhishek Soni said that taxpayers who have opted for the composition scheme under GST are required to use the GSTR-9A form to file annual returns.

Exemption for these taxpayers

Tanushree Roy further said that the government has exempted some specific categories of taxpayers from filing GST annual returns. They are as follows-

  • Input service distributors
  • Taxpayers paying tax under section 51
  • Taxpayers paying tax under section 52
  • Casual tax payers
  • Non-resident tax payers

Annual return is not necessary for these traders also

Let us tell you that in the month of July, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has exempted GST registered small businessmen from filing annual GST returns for the financial year 2023-24. In a notification issued in this regard, it was said, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the first provision of section 44 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 (12 of 2017), the Commissioner, on the recommendations of the Council, exempts such registered person whose total turnover in the financial year 2023-24 is up to two crore rupees, from filing annual return for the said financial year.”
