India Meteorological Department (IMD or India Meteorological Department) has said that high humidity may increase the problems of people in Tripura, Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Assam, Meghalaya and Goa. Strong winds, light rain and storm may provide temporary relief in parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on April 26. This is the second phase of heat wave this month.
There may be a hot night in Odisha during 27-29 April
According to the Meteorological Department, heatwave conditions have prevailed in Odisha since April 15 and in Gangetic West Bengal since April 17. Hot night conditions are likely over Odisha during April 27-29. High temperature at night is considered dangerous because it does not give the body a chance to cool down. Nighttime heat increases are more common in cities due to the urban heat island (UHI) effect. In this effect, metro areas are much warmer than their surrounding areas.
Will have to face extreme heat in April-June
Amid ongoing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD has already issued an extreme heat warning during the April-June period. IMD has said that this time the heat wave may last for 10 to 20 days compared to the usual 4 to 8 days of heat wave in the entire April-June period.
The regions which are predicted to see a high number of heat wave days are Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Bihar and Jharkhand. More than 20 heatwave days may be recorded at some places. The extreme heat may put pressure on power grids and result in water shortages in some parts of India.
