These days the prevalence of online mode in financial activities has led to a great scope for financial inclusion and added transparency and accountability. The Income Tax department in India has offered online access to the average taxpayers, wherein they can enquire for their tax-related details.
The department of taxation offers the facility to view and enquire about challan status online. By simply visiting the official portal of TIN-NSDL, taxpayers can keep a track of their challan deposits and hence, can verify the details pertaining to their taxation related payment history. Basically, TDS challan status can be tracked on the online mode through two modes – TAN view and CIN view.
In the TAN view mode of challan tracking, TAN number serves as the accessing number for challan tracking. TAN number or Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number is a ten-digit number that is mandatory to be quoted in any communication regarding TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) under Section 203 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. For any tracking of transactions related to TDS deduction and remittance against the same, TAN is mandatory to be mentioned by the individual tax payers.
In the TAN view mode of challan tracking, the information which can be fetched includes the CIN (Challan Identification Number), Minor and Major Head Codes and the mode/nature of payment. The taxpayer simply has to mention the TAN and CTD (Challan Tender Date) and these details can be viewed. Following are the steps that need to be followed while tracking TDS challan status in TAN view mode:

- There are two options of either viewing the challan details or downloading the challan file.
- You will be able to view the TDS challan details for the selected period, which should be less than 2 years from the current date.
In the CIN view mode, CIN (Challan Identification Number) serves as the accessing number for TDS challan tracking. CIN number is mandated to be mentioned by the issuing bank on the challan receipt. It actually serves as a receipt against the tax paid by the individual. The information that can be accessed in CIN view mode comprises of the serial number of challan, the BSR code, Major Head Code, date of payment, TAN details, name and PAN (Permanent Account Number) details of the taxpayer, the mode/nature of payment and the date when TIN was received.
