The Passport Seva program has ushered in a major digital transformation in passport services in the last six years. With the introduction of the facility of passport registration and passport application in various post offices by India Post in the country, now applying for passport has become much easier. Know which documents are necessary
- Identity proof such as Aadhar card, election voter ID, or any valid photo ID.
- Proof of age, birth certificate, school leaving certificate, etc.
- Driving License, Pan Card, Aadhar Card.
- Address proof like electricity bill, water bill, gas connection, mobile bill.
- Photo passbook of running bank account.

How to apply for a passport online in India
Step 1: Visit the official website of Passport Seva i.e. passportindia.gov.in. Go to
Step 2: If you are an existing user, you can log in using the old login ID and password. But, if you are using for the first time, you will need to register and create a new account.
Step 3: On the home page, click on ‘Register Now’ under the ‘New User’ tab.
Step 4: Next, enter the User ID and Password, then enter the captcha code for verification and click on ‘Register’.
Step 5: Now, login to the Passport Seva online portal with the registered login ID.
Step 6: After login, choose from the given options and click on the link ‘Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport’.
Step 7: Fill the required details carefully in the application form and click on the link ‘Upload e-Form’ to submit.
Step 8: Next, on the ‘View saved/submitted applications’ screen, click on the link ‘Pay and schedule appointment’ to schedule an appointment.
Step 9: Finally click on the link ‘Print Application Receipt’ to take a printout of the application receipt. The receipt contains the application reference number or appointment number which should be kept safe for future reference.
