In such a situation, to avoid any kind of unwanted hassle, you can take advantage of the lock and unlock facility provided by UIDAI.

The UIDAI provides the facility to lock and onlock the Aadhaar number to protect the data and privacy of Aadhaar card holders. After locking the Aadhaar card, fraudsters of any kind will not be able to misuse your card in any way. Verification can be done via virtual ID after locking the Aadhaar card. Virtual IT is only with the Aadhaar cardholder.

The thing to keep in mind here is that before locking the Aadhaar Card, one has to generate a virtual ID. If you do not already have a virtual ID, you can generate a virtual ID via SMS on the Aadhaar helpline number 1947. The virtual ID is 16 digits.

SMS this message from your mobile to 1947- GVID XXXX (XXXX here shows the last four digits of the Aadhaar card number.)

How to Lock Aadhaar Card Online (How to lock Aadhaar card online)

  1. Open https://resident.uidai.gov.in/ in your mobile or laptop browser.
  2. Look at the ‘Aadhaar Services’ tab under ‘My Aadhaar Section’ here.
  3. Now you have to click on ‘Aadhaar Lock and Unlock Service’.
  4. Now a new page will open in front of you.
  5. Select the Lock UID option on this page.
  6. Enter the Aadhaar number.
  7. Write down your full name.
  8. Enter the PIN code.
  9. After entering the security code, click on ‘Send OTP’.
  10. After entering OTP you will be able to lock your Aadhaar card.
