Weather Updates: The Meteorological Department has predicted the second western disturbance to become active in the next four days. There is a possibility of rain and snowfall in the western Himalayan region including Uttar Pradesh. There may be rain in many South Indian states as well.

Weather Updates: Bone-chilling cold has started in the hilly areas of North India due to snowfall and rain. After light rain on Monday, the day temperature has dropped sharply in many areas of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. On the other hand, severe cold wave continues in Kashmir. The second western disturbance is likely to become active in the next four days. Due to these western disturbances, rain and snowfall may occur in the affected areas. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of lightning and rain at isolated places in Uttarakhand, UP, Rajasthan and South Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from today till December 28.

Second western disturbance is becoming active, possibility of rain

Two western disturbances are hovering over different parts of the country. One of these is present in Punjab and surrounding lower and middle parts. Due to which there is a possibility of rain and snowfall at different places in the western Himalayan region including UP. The Meteorological Department says that another western disturbance can affect North West India from the night of 26 December. It is likely to remain in the central parts of the country along with lower level easterly winds till 28 December. The second western disturbance is likely to become active in Rajasthan on 26 December. There is a possibility of rain in some districts here between 26-28 December.

IMD says that there is a possibility of rain at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on 24 and 25 December. At the same time, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on 25 and 26 December.

Bone-chilling cold for the next two days

The Meteorological Department says that the minimum temperature in northwest India may fall by about 2 degrees Celsius during the next 2 days. After this the temperature will fall further. This may increase the cold. No significant change in minimum temperature is expected in central and eastern India during the next 5 days. Minimum temperature is likely to increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius in West India (except Gujarat state) during the next 2 days.

The Meteorological Department has informed in the afternoon bulletin that cold wave is likely in some parts of Himachal Pradesh on 24 and 25 December. Cold wave continues in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan and Muzaffarabad. Cold wave continued in the valley with snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir on Tuesday and the minimum temperature was recorded several degrees below the freezing point. Severe cold continues in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh on 24 and 25 December. Similar weather may continue for the next two days.

Bone-chilling cold also freezes pipelines

Severe cold continues in Kashmir and on Monday the maximum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 2.8 degrees Celsius, which was six degrees below normal. Due to the fall in temperature, water froze in the water supply pipelines while a thin layer of ice formed on the surface of many reservoirs. The minimum temperature was recorded at minus 7.8 degrees Celsius in Pahalgam, the base camp of the annual Amarnath Yatra in South Kashmir. The Meteorological Department said that the night temperature in Gulmarg, a tourist destination famous for ‘skiing’ activities in North Kashmir, was recorded at minus 7.4 degrees Celsius, which is about three degrees Celsius less than the previous night. According to the Meteorological Department, the weather will remain mainly dry on December 29 and 30, while light snowfall is possible in some high altitude areas on New Year’s Eve.

Dense fog and severe cold in these states

Cold day conditions are likely in different parts of Rajasthan on December 24. Dense fog is likely to persist in different parts of Rajasthan late tonight and next morning. Till 26th and 27th, people will experience bone-chilling cold along with fog in the early morning in Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
