IMD Rainfall Alert: Heavy rain continues in many parts of Kerala. Along with this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a ‘red alert’ for five districts of the state and has predicted extremely heavy rain. According to the weather agency, ‘red alert’ has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki. Although ‘Orange Alert’ was earlier issued for Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam, the IMD later changed the warning to ‘Red Alert’. Along with this, extremely heavy rain has been predicted at different places in these districts.
IMD said that ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad, while ‘Yellow Alert’ is for Kannur and Kasaragod. Officials said that by Thursday night, high waves ranging from 0.4 to 3.3 meters are expected along the Kerala coast from Vizhinjam in the south to Kasaragod in the north. Under ‘Red Alert’, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm is expected in 24 hours, while in ‘Orange Alert’ extremely heavy rainfall of 11 cm to 20 cm is expected and in ‘Yellow Alert’ between 6 cm and 11 cm. Health Minister Veena George said that in view of the continuous heavy rains, activities to contain the pandemic have been intensified and a state control room has been opened at the health department directorate here. He said in a statement that a state level rapid response team has already been constituted by the department to contain the pandemic.
